Today I wrote a thank you letter to Mike Ban, the proprietor of Yosemite Valley Beef. I don’t know Mike, but I know his friend, Steve, a Korean gentleman who lives in Los Angeles. Steve serves a relatively brief sentence with me here at Taft Camp and a few months ago, he asked me whether I thought the warden would be receptive to receiving a donation of meat from Yosemite Valley Beef. Mike wanted to donate the beef in order to offer the prisoners at Taft Camp a special meal to celebrate a Korean holiday. I was not optimistic.
Despite my pessimism about the likelihood of authorization, Steve received permission. Mike donated the beef and Steve coordinated assistance from several other Korean prisoners. They worked together to prepare a traditional Korean meal for all the prisoners and staff at Taft Camp. It was a real treat, the best meal I’ve eaten during my 22 years of imprisonment.
When I begin my life with Carole, I look forward to exploring all aspects of society with her by my side. Eating in restaurants and submerging my body in water are two activities that I cannot wait to experience. I no longer remember what either is like, and I’m excited.
This morning I ran 10 miles and followed the run with 300 pushups. My tally is now 2,732 miles over the past 306 days. I edited chapter seven in the afternoon and I wrote a letter to Peggy, a writing mentor and friend of mine.
