After a long day of writing, I’m pleased to have advanced the manuscript of Earning Freedom to page 189. That concludes my first draft of chapter four, bringing the reader through early 1992. This writing project really fulfills me, and I’m grateful for every hour I have available to write in peace.
I began this morning at 2:03 am, and I did not finish until nearly 3:00 in the afternoon. That’s a long time to complete only nine pages, but a lot of reading and editing goes into the work as well. To conclude today’s work, I also had to research some dates on historic prisoners like Solzhenitsyn, Mandela, and a prisoner whom the famous journalist Orianna Falloci loved.
Besides the writing, I only broke for my exercise today and to eat. I ran 10 miles, bringing my tally to 1,926 miles over 218 days, though being eager to write, I did not follow the run with strength training.
I have been reading your blog for sometime. I find it very interesting and agree with many of the issues you have exposed. Our prison system is not perfect. I worked over 14 years on the other side of the bars and can vouch that rehabilitation is one of the lower priorities. I know many offenders that I feel could be released and present little danger to society and would have the best chance at never reoffending. The problem is that the laws they were sentenced under never give them an opportunity for parole.
Keep up the good work. You are building a solid foundation that should serve you well upon your release.
