Its crazy how misinformed most people are about the justice system and mass incarceration in this country. More importantly, the bad policies and legislation for exoffenders after they have shown to be rehabilitated is a shame in this country. The laws and policies have made it hard for an exoffenders to be a law abiding, tax paying, productive citizen once they are released. They most likely can't turn their life around when they try. Exoffenders can't earn a livable pay wage. Minimum wage just doesn't cut it for most. They are denied employment, education, housing, etc. Which leads to more crime and high recidivism. We are no safer nor is crime down do to our current failed policies so lets introduce or go another strategy.

I read your book 'Inside' in 2008, a few months after attempting sucide. I was a mortgage broker and had lost lots of money and had lots of free time. Your book really inspired me. I am now a devout buddhist practicioner living and working at a Dharma Center. My prayers are with you, I'm rooting for you, and I hope your example of human achievment inspires others to see the great beauty and value life has to offer. You inspire me.

Dear Larry,

Congratulations on the success you've built for yourself. Without a doubt, you've assuaged the fears of many people, and if you’re the formidable competitor that you represent yourself to be, I’m sure you’ve earned hundreds of thousands of dollars for your efforts.

I've read coverage of your work in the national news over the years and you're clearly leading the space. But if the reporter from the New York Times quoted you accurately, you have some concerns regarding competition. Toward the end of this year, competition for all prison consultants will increase. Since the mid-1990s, with the conclusion of my formal education, I've been preparing to build a career around all that I've learned as a long term prisoner and I feel well prepared to navigate through all challenges ahead. My objective has always been to help others understand prisons, the people they hold, and strategies for triumphing over adversity. Part of the national practice that I intend to build will include advising individuals who are enmeshed in the criminal justice system, and another significant part will be in developing a platform that brings attention to the wretchedness of long-term imprisonment.

I do appreciate your good wishes for my release. With regard to those short-term prisoners you refer to who fancy themselves as consultants with experience, I find it curious that you see them as being any different from those who mischaracterize detention centers as high security penitentiaries. Although I suppose some marketing currency exists in the deception, anyone with experience in a real penitentiary would the find the ruse humorous. It's all marketing, I suppose.

In any event, perhaps we will meet in months or years to come. I wish you peace, happiness, and continuing success.

Sincerely,

Michael G. Santos

Let's see, I helped hundreds of people at several institutions with administrative remedies, filed a class action Habeas and got hundreds of people transferred, got chastised by prison staff for helping people while on the inside, and continue to help people today. Although I admit I lack the 25 years of experience that you have, the work I have accomplished speaks for itself. I wish you well upon your upcoming release, and hope that the USPO doesn't give you much grief about felon association upon release. While you may have value as a penny stock upon reentry, I think your value will increase to blue chip standing as time goes on. At least your credentials are real, unlike those short-timers who only did time at Taft and think they have experience!

Michael,
Just wanted to wish you good luck! 2013 is not far away.
I'm from Brasil and Santos is a very common surname, there. Are you Brasilian or Portuguese? Any way, all the best.

Carole,
We have spoken on the phone when this was all relatively new to me and I have continued to follow both you and Michael through the web. This has become my own personal journey and like you find myself looking forward to doing all those things again that we have missed as a couple. My husband will hopefully be headed to a halfway house sometime in Dec or Jan and I can not wait for the time when the prison visit vacations simply become family vacations and we can walk the beach or go camping together.
It has been a lonely time for me, but one filled with self discovery and a desire to change the current system for the better of all. I have tried to take my experience and be a lighthouse for those who unfortunately find themselves on the same journey. Right now I pray for a relatively smooth transition back into a full family life, that people allow us the quiet, blessed life we would like to live and that the voices get heard and the people in power start to change the system of the betterment of all.
My prayers to you and Michael and I know that you will find success and happiness of your own design. Thank you for being there for me.
